Hajj Belt Guide: Ihram Belts, Money Belts and Which to Buy

Hajj Belt Guide: Ihram Belts, Money Belts and Which to Buy

A Hajj belt is a flat, zipped pouch on an adjustable strap that men wear around the waist, over the Ihram. It carries your passport, phone, cards and cash, and it helps keep the izar from slipping. Most scholars allow it. Look for separate zipped pockets, a strap that cannot easily be cut, and a fit that is comfortable for a full day of walking.

Religious content checked by Dr Wendy Booth, a student of Islam.

Women do not wear the two-sheet Ihram, so this guide is mainly for men. If you are buying for your mum, wife or sister, skip to the belt and bag comparison.

What a Hajj belt does

Ihram has no pockets. The moment you change at Heathrow or Manchester, your passport, boarding pass and phone need somewhere to go. Holding them in your hand works for ten minutes. It does not work for Tawaf.

It does three jobs:

  • It carries your valuables. Passport, phone, bank card, hotel key card and some cash, each in its own place.
  • It holds the izar. Worn over the rolled top of the lower sheet, it stops the cloth working loose as you walk.
  • It keeps your hands free. For Tawaf, Sa'i, raising your hands in dua and, on Hajj, throwing pebbles at the Jamarat.

It also saves time. A zipped pocket you know by touch is quicker than patting down a bag at every checkpoint, bus door and hotel lift.

What to keep in it

Pack your belt the night before you travel, and keep the same pocket for the same thing every day. After two days your hand finds it without looking.

  • Passport in the pocket you open least. Zip it and leave it.
  • Phone in the pocket you can reach fastest.
  • Cash in small notes, with only a day's spending in the belt.
  • One bank card. The second card stays in the hotel safe.
  • Hotel key card and a card with the hotel name and your group leader's number.

Leave out anything you do not need that day. A belt stuffed with receipts and spare cables stops lying flat, and then it stops being comfortable.

Why our belt has a wire in the strap

Our founder, Kamal Ali, trained as a teacher and has a background in product design. He taught design technology and digital animation in schools for over 8 years, locally, nationally and internationally. He heard about a pilgrim whose bag was cut open during Hajj and who lost everything in it. So he designed an Ihram belt with a steel wire running through the strap, so it cannot simply be sliced off in a crowd. He tells the full story in how I created an anti-theft Ihram belt.

Is a belt allowed in Ihram?

Yes, according to the large majority of scholars. The rule for men is that they do not wear clothing cut and sewn to the shape of the body, such as shirts, trousers and underwear. A belt or money pouch is not a garment of that kind. Having stitching on it does not change that.

The four main schools of thought all allow a money belt, with small differences of detail. For example, some scholars say it should be worn to carry your money and needs, not as decoration. If you follow a particular scholar, ask them before you travel.

We go through the evidence and the different views in our post can you wear a belt in Ihram?

What to look for: pockets, fastening, comfort

Most belts look similar in a photo. The differences show up after six hours in the heat.

Pockets

You want separate zipped sections, not one big pouch. When your passport, phone and cash each have their own place, you can reach one without taking the others out in the crowd.

Strap and fastening

A zip can be kept shut with a hand. A strap can be cut, which is exactly what happened to the pilgrim whose story started Hajj Safe. A strap with a wire running through it is much harder to cut. Check the buckle too: it should feel firm and not open with a light tug.

Material

Water-resistant fabric matters more than people expect. Sweat, wudu splashes and a spilt cup of Zamzam will all reach your passport otherwise. It also rains in Makkah sometimes.

Size and weight

Flat is better than deep. A thick pouch pushes the izar out and digs in when you sit for salah. Light matters too, because you will wear it from Fajr to Isha.

Fit

Check the waist range before you buy, especially if you are buying as a gift.

Here is how our own belt measures up against that list:

What to look for Hajj Safe anti-theft Ihram belt
Separate pockets Dedicated compartments for phone, passport, tickets and money
Cut-resistant strap Steel wire-lined strap
Water-resistant Water-resistant nylon
Flat and light Pouch 28cm x 13cm x 3cm, weighs 170g

Ihram belt vs neck bag vs side bag

A belt is not the only answer. It suits some pilgrims better than others.

Option Who it suits Good at Less good at
Ihram belt Men in Ihram Holding the izar, sitting flat, hands free Not for women; holds less than a bag
Hajj and Umrah bag for men Men who prefer a bag Three zipped pockets, wear it round the neck or across the body Does not hold the izar
Women's Hajj and Umrah bag Women Three zipped pockets, worn over or under the abaya Made for women; men have their own version

Choose the belt if you are a man and want one place for passport, phone and cash that also keeps your Ihram up.

Choose a neck or side bag if you are a woman, if you find anything around the waist uncomfortable, or if you want room for a small dua book and earphones as well. Our Hajj and Umrah bags for men and women have three zipped pockets and an adjustable neck strap, and the men's bag also has a chest strap to stop it swinging.

Some men use both. The belt for passport and cash, and a light bag for water, tissues and a pocket Qur'an. That split also means one mistake cannot cost you everything.

How to wear it with Ihram

Practise this at home, twice, before you fly. The first try always feels awkward.

  1. Wrap the izar around your waist so one edge overlaps the other at the front, with the top edge above your navel.
  2. Roll the top edge down two or three times so it grips.
  3. Put the belt on over the roll, sitting just above the hip bones. Tighten until it holds the cloth but does not pinch.
  4. Turn the pouch to the front for travel and crowds. You can see it and reach it.
  5. Drape the rida over your shoulders. For the Tawaf of Umrah, men pass it under the right arm to uncover the right shoulder. The belt is not affected.

A few habits that help:

  • Put the passport in first and zip it shut. Only open that pocket when someone official asks for it.
  • In salah, slide the pouch slightly to the side so it does not press on you in ruku' and sujood.
  • At night in Mina or the hotel, keep it on or under your pillow, not on a chair.

Where to buy in the UK

You have two realistic options.

Online from a UK seller. We are a family business in Newport, Wales, and sell our belts online. Hajj Safe has also been sold in UK pharmacies, including Dears Pharmacy. Order early. You want the belt at least three weeks before you fly, so you can wear it around the house and adjust the strap.

We usually send UK orders within 1–2 working days by Royal Mail, and UK delivery usually takes 2–4 working days. See our delivery page for current costs.

Islamic shops in your area. Good for handling a belt before you buy. Stock can run low in the weeks before Hajj and Ramadan. If you buy in a shop, try the zips, pull on the buckle and check the waist range.

Buying it as a gift? Ask the pilgrim for his trouser waist size first, and check it against the belt's range. Order early enough that he can try it on and practise with the Ihram before he flies.

Whichever you choose, avoid buying at the airport or in Makkah on arrival. You want the belt in your hand luggage, tested, before you leave home.

You can see the full range in our Hajj and Umrah bags and anti-theft belts collection.

Buy the belt early, wear it at home, and only open the passport pocket when you have to.

FAQ

Can women wear an Ihram belt?

Our Ihram belt is designed for men and fits UK waist sizes 30 to 42+. Women are better served by our women's Hajj and Umrah bag, which can be worn over or under the abaya.

Should the belt go over or under the Ihram?

Most men wear it over the izar, where it also holds the cloth in place. You can wear it underneath, but it is harder to reach at checkpoints.

Is a money belt the same as a Hajj belt?

A travel money belt is usually a thin pouch worn under clothes. A Hajj belt is built to be worn over the Ihram, with a pouch you can reach and a strap that holds the izar.

Do I need a belt for Umrah as well as Hajj?

Yes, if you are a man in Ihram. Umrah is shorter, but Tawaf and Sa'i can be just as crowded, and your passport still needs a home.

What if my waist is over 42 inches?

Contact us before ordering and tell us your waist size, and we will tell you honestly whether the belt will fit.
