Quba Walk: Following the Blessed Footsteps of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

What is Masjid Quba?

Masjid Quba is the first mosque in Islamic history, built in 622 CE shortly after Prophet Muhammad ﷺ migrated to Madinah. It holds immense significance as a symbol of faith, unity, and community. The Prophet ﷺ personally laid its foundation, showing us the importance of building a space for worship and connection.

Visiting this mosque is a special act of devotion. The Prophet ﷺ said: “He who purifies himself at his home and comes to Masjid Quba and offers two rakats therein will be rewarded the reward of an Umrah.” [Sunan Ibn Majah]. It’s no wonder that thousands of pilgrims flock here each year, seeking these rewards and walking in the footsteps of the Prophet ﷺ.

What is the Quba Walk?

The Quba Walk is a historic path that connects Masjid an-Nabawi to Masjid Quba. This 4.4-kilometre route was regularly walked by the Prophet ﷺ, embodying his humility and dedication. It takes about 45-55 minutes on foot or just 11 minutes by car.

The walk offers more than just a physical journey—it’s an act of reflection. As you pass through the Al Jummah Neighbourhood Gateway, you are reminded of the migration of the Prophet ﷺ and the sacrifices made for the establishment of Islam. Walking this path is a way to connect deeply with his legacy and reflect on your own spiritual journey.

Why is Masjid Quba Special?

Masjid Quba is not just a mosque—it’s a place filled with stories of resilience and devotion. The Prophet ﷺ stayed here for three days with his companion Abu Bakr رضي الله عنه after their migration from Makkah. He personally contributed to its construction, making it a centre of worship and community.

The serene atmosphere of Masjid Quba invites worshippers to pause, reflect, and connect with Allah. Praying two rakats here carries the reward of an Umrah, a reminder of the immense blessings tied to this sacred place.

Explore Quba Square

Next to Masjid Quba lies Quba Square, a lively area filled with cafes, shops, and spaces for families. It’s the perfect starting point for the Quba Walk or a place to relax after visiting the mosque.

Renovated to cater to visitors of all ages, Quba Square balances its historical roots with modern amenities. In 2018, it was recognised as the Best Tourist Attraction in the Saudi Excellence in Tourism Awards, making it a must-visit spot for those in Madinah.

Why Should You Take the Quba Walk?

The Quba Walk is more than just a walk—it’s a journey through history and faith. Walking in the footsteps of the Prophet ﷺ is a humbling experience, reminding us of the simplicity and strength of his life.

Every step brings you closer to Masjid Quba, the first mosque of Islam, and to a deeper understanding of your own spiritual journey. This walk is an act of love, reflection, and connection—a way to honour the sacrifices of the Prophet ﷺ and his companions while embracing the timeless beauty of Islamic history.
