When Is the Best Time to Perform Umrah for US Residents?

For Muslims in the United States, the desire to perform Umrah is a heartfelt one. It’s a journey of the soul — an invitation to the House of Allah ﷻ and an opportunity to seek His mercy and draw nearer to Him.

But with travel logistics, visa changes, and new policies in place, many are now asking: When is the best time to perform Umrah from the US? Alhamdulillah, recent developments have made this journey more accessible than ever.

The Best Time to Go for Umrah

The months after Hajj — particularly Muharram through Rajab — are often the best times to perform Umrah. These periods tend to be less crowded, offering pilgrims a more peaceful and reflective experience. Travel costs are usually lower during these off-peak months, making it easier for families and individuals alike.

Spring and autumn are also favourable for those seeking milder temperatures, especially when travelling with elders or young children.

Why Booking a Package Is Helpful

For many in the US, booking an Umrah package is the most practical option. A good package typically includes round-trip flights, accommodation near Masjid al-Haram or Masjid an-Nabawi, local transport, and sometimes the guidance of a scholar or group leader. This makes a significant difference in focusing on your ibadah without worrying about logistics.

Always ensure the agency is reputable and approved by the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah.

Key Visa Changes for American Pilgrims

The Saudi Government has made several updates to make Umrah easier for Muslims around the world — and especially for those in the West. Here are three important changes:

1. No More 2,000 SAR Repeat Umrah Fee

In the past, a pilgrim who wished to perform Umrah again within two years had to pay an additional 2,000 SAR. This fee has now been removed. The new visa fee is a standard 300 SAR (around $80), allowing multiple visits within the year, inshaAllah.

2. E-Visa Now Available for the USA

One of the most welcome changes is the introduction of the Umrah e-Visa. American citizens can now apply online without needing to visit a travel agent or embassy. The process is simple, and most e-Visas are issued within 24–48 hours.

Keep in mind that the Umrah visa is valid for 15 days from the date of issue — so plan travel dates accordingly.

3. Visit Other Cities Beyond Makkah & Madinah

Pilgrims can now explore other parts of Saudi Arabia using a Tourist Visa. This allows travellers to see historical Islamic landmarks beyond the two holy cities, such as Riyadh, AlUla, or the caves of Hira and Thawr. It’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with the spiritual and cultural history of the region.

A Journey Worth Preparing For

The ability to perform Umrah is a gift from Allah ﷻ. With travel becoming easier and more convenient for Muslims in the US, there is no better time to begin preparing. May Allah accept the Umrah of those who have been and grant the opportunity to all who long for it. Ameen.
