Performing Umrah is a beautiful and spiritual journey, a chance to seek closeness to Allah (SWT) and attain His blessings. For sisters embarking on this journey, there are a few common mistakes that can be avoided to ensure a smooth and fulfilling experience, Insha’Allah. Here are key points to keep in mind:
1. Excessive Fear of Breaking Hair in Ihram
Many sisters worry excessively about breaking hair while in Ihram, leading them to avoid removing their hijab even for wudhu (ablution). It’s important to remember that involuntary hair loss does not break your Ihram. The prohibition is against intentional hair removal. So, ensure that your wudhu is done properly without unnecessary concern. If your wudhu is incomplete, your prayer or tawaaf may not be valid. Allah (SWT) does not hold you accountable for something beyond your control.
2. Rushing Through Prayers
In the rush of completing acts of worship, some sisters tend to prioritise quantity over quality in their Salah (prayer), dua, and other forms of Ibaadah. Remember, it’s not about how much you do but how you do it. Two rakah of Salah prayed with full concentration and humility is far better than hastily performed multiple rakah without understanding or focus. Allah (SWT) values the sincerity and devotion in your worship.
3. Crowding with the Men
Trying to touch the Hajar Aswad (the Black Stone) can sometimes lead to uncomfortable situations, especially when it comes to crowding with men. Some sisters end up being pushed, and in the process, their hijab gets displaced or removed. While touching the Hajar Aswad is a Sunnah, preserving your modesty is more important. Be patient, and if the crowd is overwhelming, avoid putting yourself in a position where your hijab or dignity may be compromised.
4. Misbehaving in Masjid Nabawi
A common mistake some sisters make is rushing into the Rawdah in Masjid Nabawi, pushing others, and raising their voices. When visiting this blessed mosque, we should always remain respectful and humble. The Prophet’s (PBUH) mosque is a place of peace, reflection, and devotion. Keep your voice low, walk calmly, and avoid pushing others. Even if you don’t get the chance to pray in the Rawdah, let your sister pray without disrupting her. Allah (SWT) rewards those who show kindness and patience, and you will be rewarded for your intention and respect towards others, Insha’Allah.
5. Leaving Ihram If Their Cycle Starts
It is essential to understand that menstruation does not break your Ihram. Some sisters believe they must leave the state of Ihram if their cycle begins. This is not true. During your cycle, you can stay in Ihram and perform all the Umrah rituals except Tawaaf (circumambulation of the Kaaba). Once your cycle ends and you purify yourself, you can complete your Tawaaf without having to go back to Miqat or redo your Ihram. It’s important to be aware of this so that you can continue your Umrah with ease, Alhamdulillah.
6. Thinking Nothing Can Touch Your Face
Another misconception among some sisters is that nothing should touch their face while in Ihram. This leads to avoiding wiping their face after wudhu or letting anything come into contact with it. However, this is not a requirement. There is no issue if something touches your face while in Ihram. If necessary, women can cover their faces with something other than a niqab, as Aisha (RA) did during her Ihram. This will not invalidate your Ihram or the rituals of Umrah, so don't let this worry distract you from focusing on your Ibaadah.
Final Thoughts
Umrah is a spiritual experience, and with proper knowledge, sisters can avoid these common mistakes. Remember that Allah (SWT) rewards our efforts and intentions, and it is through sincerity and devotion that we seek His pleasure. May Allah (SWT) grant every sister a blessed and fulfilling Umrah, and may He make your journey easy and rewarding. Ameen!
