Essential Duas for Visiting Madinah – What Every Muslim Should Know

Visiting Madinah is a dream for every believer. It is the city of our beloved Prophet ﷺ, a place filled with tranquillity, love, and barakah. Whether you are going for Hajj, Umrah, or simply visiting, knowing the right duas to recite will enhance your experience and deepen your connection with Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.

Here are six important duas every Muslim should know before visiting Madinah.

1. Dua When Entering Madinah

As you step into the blessed city of Madinah, it is important to acknowledge its sanctity. The Prophet ﷺ made Madinah a sacred sanctuary, just like Makkah. We seek Allah’s protection and blessings upon entering:

O Allah, this is the Sacred Precinct of Your Prophet, so make it a protection for me from the Fire and a security from punishment and a bad reckoning.

Take a moment to reflect on the significance of being in the Prophet’s ﷺ city—where he lived, prayed, and spread the message of Islam.

2. Dua When Entering Masjid an-Nabawi

Entering Masjid an-Nabawi is one of the most emotional experiences for any Muslim. It is a place of peace and blessings, and the Prophet ﷺ encouraged us to pray there as it holds immense rewards.

Upon entering, recite this dua:

In the name of Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad ﷺ. O Allah, open for me the doors of Your Bounty.

Pray two rak’ahs of Tahiyyat al-Masjid (greeting the mosque) and thank Allah for allowing you to step into this blessed masjid.

3. Sending Salam to the Prophet ﷺ

No visit to Madinah is complete without sending salutations upon the Prophet ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ himself said:

"Whoever sends blessings upon me once, Allah will send blessings upon him tenfold." (Muslim 384)

You can say:

Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah.

Or a longer version:

May the peace and blessings be upon you, O Messenger of Allah.

As you stand before the Rawdah, send your love and gratitude to the Prophet ﷺ, and ask Allah to grant you his intercession on the Day of Judgment.

4. Sending Salam on Behalf of Others

Many people ask their loved ones to convey Salam on their behalf. This is a beautiful practice and can be done with the following words:

Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah, from (mention name), son/daughter of (mention name).

Carrying the duas and greetings of others is an honour and a sign of love for the Prophet ﷺ and the Ummah.

5. Sending Salam to Abu Bakr and Umar (RA)

Next to the Prophet’s ﷺ blessed grave are the graves of his closest companions—Abu Bakr as-Siddiq (RA) and Umar ibn al-Khattab (RA). It is Sunnah to send Salam upon them:

Peace be upon you, O Caliph of the Muslims, Abu Bakr as-Siddiq.

Peace be upon you, O Commander of the Faithful, Umar ibn al-Khattab.

These two great men dedicated their lives to Islam—take a moment to reflect on their sacrifices and make dua for the Muslim Ummah.

6. Dua When Visiting Jannatul Baqi (The Cemetery of Madinah)

Jannatul Baqi is the resting place of many Sahabah, family members of the Prophet ﷺ, and righteous believers. It is Sunnah to visit graveyards and make dua for those who have passed away.

Peace be upon you, home of believing people. What you were promised has come to you, and tomorrow we shall be joining you. O Allah, forgive the inhabitants of Baqi’ al-Gharqad.

As you stand in this historic graveyard, reflect on the temporary nature of this world and make dua that Allah grants Jannah to all those buried there.
