The Hajar al-Aswad, or the Black Stone, is one of the most revered and significant elements in the Ka'bah, the holiest site in Islam. The Sacred History of Hajar al-Aswad
The Hajar al-Aswad consists of eight small fragments held together by Arabic frankincense and a silver frame. Muslims seek to kiss, touch, or gesture towards it during the Tawaf (circumambulation) around the Ka'bah. Over centuries, countless Prophets, including Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself, placed their blessed lips upon this stone.
It is believed that the stone was brought to Prophet Ibrahim (AS) by Angel Jibreel (AS) when he and his son, Prophet Ismail (AS), were constructing the Ka'bah. When a gap was noticed in the structure, Prophet Ibrahim (AS) instructed Ismail (AS) to search for a suitable rock. Upon returning, Ismail (AS) found that the perfect stone had already been placed by the Angel. This divine act is one of the many blessings that surround the construction of the Ka'bah.
A Gift from Paradise
According to narrations from Ibn Abbas (RA), the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “The Black Stone came down from Paradise and it was whiter than milk, but the sins of the sons of Adam turned it black” (Tirmidhi). This shows how this heavenly stone, once pristine and radiant, changed its color due to the impact of human sin over time. It remains a powerful reminder of our human imperfections and the mercy of Allah (SWT).
The Theft and Restoration of Hajar al-Aswad
In 930 CE, the Hajar al-Aswad was stolen from the Ka'bah by a group known as the Qarmatians, who took it to their base in Ihsaa (modern-day Bahrain). For over 22 years, the stone was missing from its rightful place until it was returned in 952 CE. The historian Al-Juwayni records that the stone was restored, allowing pilgrims once again to complete their rites properly.
The State of Hajar al-Aswad Today
Originally a single stone, the Hajar al-Aswad has endured various challenges over centuries. It was broken into eight pieces and is now encased in a silver frame. The first silver encasement was crafted by Abdullah bin Zubair (RA) and has since been replaced by different rulers throughout history. Today, it measures approximately 7.9 inches by 6.3 inches, though its size has slightly changed due to repairs and remodelling efforts over time.
Honoring the Hajar al-Aswad: Proper Etiquette
Touching or kissing the Hajar al-Aswad is a Sunnah, not an obligation. It is an act of devotion and not of idolatry. As Prophet Muhammad ﷺ demonstrated during his Tawaf, intention (Niyyah) is more important than action. Here are some etiquettes to keep in mind:
- Avoid pushing or causing harm to others when attempting to kiss the stone.
- Kissing or touching the stone is not obligatory; it’s enough to point towards it and recite Takbeer if you cannot reach it.
- It should be an act of reverence, not one of idolatry.
- If you do reach it, gently touch or kiss it, following the example of the Prophet ﷺ.
Caliph Umar (RA) once said while kissing the Hajar al-Aswad, “I know well that you are just a stone that can do neither good nor harm. Had I not seen the Prophet ﷺ kiss you, I would not have done so.” This narration emphasizes that the action is symbolic, reflecting the Sunnah rather than attributing divine power to the stone itself.
The Hajar al-Aswad on the Day of Judgement
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, “By Allah! On the Day of Qiyamah, Allah will present the Hajar al-Aswad in such a manner that it will have two eyes and a tongue to testify to the Imaan (faith) of all those who kissed it.” (Tirmidhi). This beautiful narration shows that this sacred act of devotion will have its testimony in the Hereafter, emphasizing the significance of honoring the stone with the correct intention.
