Umrah Done Right: A Guide to Performing an Accepted Umrah

Umrah Done Right: A Guide to Performing an Accepted Umrah

What is Umrah?

Umrah is a deeply spiritual journey that Muslims can undertake at any time of the year to Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Unlike Hajj, which is an obligatory pilgrimage, Umrah is voluntary but highly encouraged for those able to embark on it. Known as the “lesser pilgrimage,” Umrah comprises meaningful rituals that help Muslims draw closer to Allah, cleanse their hearts, and renew their spiritual connection. This journey is more than a physical act—each step and prayer during Umrah is a profound reminder of faith, unity, and humility.

As you prepare for this sacred experience, the journey begins with a sincere intention, or niyyah, to perform Umrah. This is the first essential step, where you declare your purpose and focus on your devotion to Allah.

1. Make Umrah Niyyah (Intention)

Setting your niyyah, or intention, is the spiritual starting point of your journey. Before you cross any of the meeqat (entry points to the holy area), take a moment to make a clear and heartfelt intention to perform Umrah solely for Allah. This intention is then voiced through the recitation of the Talbiyah prayer:

“At your service, O Allah, at Your service.”

With the words of the Talbiyah on your lips, you are formally beginning your journey, submitting wholeheartedly to Allah’s call. This moment is filled with humility and gratitude, serving as a beautiful reminder of the purpose of your pilgrimage and your submission to Allah's will. The Talbiyah is a profound statement of devotion that will accompany you as you proceed towards Mecca, guiding your heart and mind throughout the pilgrimage.

2. Enter Ihram Before Meeqat

The next step is entering the state of Ihram, which represents purity and unity. For men, Ihram consists of two unstitched white cloths, while women wear modest attire. This simple dress code symbolises equality before Allah, as all pilgrims stand together without worldly distinctions. Entering Ihram at the meeqat prepares you for the sacred rituals ahead and helps focus your heart on worship.

3. Perform Tawaf Around the Kaaba

Once in Masjid Al-Haram, you will perform Tawaf by circling the Kaaba seven times. This act represents unity and submission to Allah. Men should observe Ittiba (uncovering the right shoulder) and Ramal (brisk walking) in the first three rounds. Each step around the Kaaba is a step closer to Allah, reaffirming your faith and devotion.

However, the crowds during Tawaf can make it challenging to stay focused, and unfortunately, theft is a common concern in such large gatherings. To protect your valuables, consider anti-theft products from Hajj Safe, which are designed to keep your belongings secure. Hajj Safe’s anti-theft bags and belts allow you to perform Tawaf with peace of mind, knowing your valuables are safe.

4. Drink from the Zamzam Well

After completing Tawaf, it is recommended to drink from the blessed Zamzam water. This water holds historical significance, as it was a miraculous gift from Allah to Hajar (RA) and her son, Prophet Ismail (AS). Drinking Zamzam symbolizes Allah’s blessings and mercy. Take this opportunity to make personal duas, asking Allah for guidance, health, and acceptance of your pilgrimage.

5. Perform Sa’i Between Safa and Marwah

Following Tawaf, you will perform Sa’i, which involves walking between the hills of Safa and Marwah seven times. This ritual commemorates Hajar’s (RA) perseverance in searching for water for her son. As you walk between these hills, reflect on the strength found in faith and the importance of resilience. The act of Sa’i is a reminder of trust in Allah, especially during life’s challenges.

6. Conclude with Halq or Taqsir

To complete your Umrah, men will perform Halq (shaving the head), while women will perform Taqsir (trimming a small portion of hair). This final act signifies humility and a new beginning. After Halq or Taqsir, you exit Ihram, marking the completion of your Umrah. This simple act symbolises spiritual renewal and the shedding of past sins.

Stay Focused on Worship with Hajj Safe
