Performing Umrah is a spiritual journey that requires physical preparation and adherence to certain guidelines. While the fundamental aspects of Umrah are the same for both men and women, there are specific regulations that women should be aware of to ensure their pilgrimage is valid and smooth.
Essential Practices of Umrah
Umrah consists of four key rituals:
- Ihram – Entering the sacred state of purity and intention.
- Tawaf al-Umrah – Circling the Kaaba seven times.
- Sa’i – Walking between Safa and Marwah.
- Halq or Taqsir – Shortening or shaving the hair (for women, cutting a small portion).
While these steps remain the same for both men and women, there are specific rulings that apply to female pilgrims.
1. Rule for Talbiyah
The Talbiyah is a key recitation during Hajj and Umrah. While men are required to say it loudly, women should recite it softly so that only they can hear. This maintains modesty and aligns with the general Islamic guidelines for female speech in public settings.
2. Rule for Raml
Raml—a Sunnah practice where men perform a brisk walk during the first three rounds of Tawaf—does not apply to women. This practice was established for men to display strength and stamina, and women are exempt from it. Women should perform Tawaf at a normal walking pace without rushing.
3. Rule for Sa’ee
During Sa’ee, men increase their pace between the two green markers at Safa and Marwah, mimicking the footsteps of Hajar (AS). However, women are not required to run and should walk at a comfortable pace while making dua and remembering the struggle of Hajar (AS).
4. Rule for Ihram
Men have a specific ihram attire consisting of two white garments. However, women can wear any modest clothing that fully covers their awrah. Their ihram should be:
- Loose-fitting and modest
- Free from embellishments and decorative designs
- Simple, covering the body appropriately
Women should also avoid wearing perfume, makeup, and jewelry while in Ihram, as these are prohibited during the sacred state.
5. Rule for Menstruation
One of the most important considerations for women is their menstrual cycle. Tawaf requires a state of purity, meaning a woman on her period cannot perform it. However, she can complete all other rituals such as Sa’ee, dhikr, and dua.
Aisha (RA) faced the same situation during Hajj, and the Prophet ﷺ reassured her:
"This is ordained by Allah for the daughters of Adam. Perform all the pilgrim rituals except Tawaf." (Sahih Muslim)
Women should plan ahead and seek medical advice if necessary to delay their cycle for Umrah.
6. Rule for Traveling Alone
Saudi Arabia now permits women to travel for Umrah without a Mahram. However, from an Islamic perspective, scholars hold different views. The Prophet ﷺ said:
"A man must never be alone with a woman unless there is a Mahram with her. A woman also may not travel with anyone except with a Mahram."
Women should always seek scholarly advice and travel with a trusted group for safety and ease.
