The Night the Quran Was Revealed: What You Should Know

The revelation of the Quran is a moment that changed the course of history forever. It was the beginning of divine guidance sent down to humanity — a mercy, a light, and a source of eternal truth. But how did this moment unfold? And what can we learn from it today?

The Night That Changed the World

Allah ﷻ says in Surah Al-Qadr:

"Indeed, We sent the Qur’an down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months. The angels and the Spirit descend therein by permission of their Lord for every matter. Peace it is until the emergence of dawn."
(Surah Al-Qadr 97:1-5)

This sacred night, known as Laylatul Qadr, is when the Quran was first revealed — a night more powerful than a thousand months. SubhanAllah, one night that holds more value than an entire lifetime.

How Did Revelation Begin?

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would often retreat to the Cave of Hira, seeking solitude and reflection. During these moments, he would worship Allah and distance himself from the corrupt practices of society. Prior to receiving revelation, he began having true dreams that would come to pass exactly as he saw them.

Then one day, during one of his retreats, everything changed.

The First Revelation

Narrated by Aisha (RA), the Prophet ﷺ said:

“An Angel came to me and said, ‘Read!’ I replied, ‘I do not know how to read.’ The Angel then embraced me tightly and repeated, ‘Read!’ This happened three times until the Angel finally said:

‘Read in the name of your Lord who created – created man from a clinging substance. Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous – Who taught by the pen – taught man that which he knew not.’
(Sahih al-Bukhari 4953, Surah Al-‘Alaq 96:1–5)

These were the very first verses of the Quran revealed to our beloved Prophet ﷺ.

How the Prophet ﷺ Reacted

Shaken and overwhelmed, the Prophet ﷺ returned home to Khadijah (RA) and said, “Cover me! Cover me!” His blessed body trembled as he described the experience. Khadijah (RA), may Allah be pleased with her, comforted him and reassured him:

“By Allah, Allah will never disgrace you. You keep good relations, speak the truth, support the poor, honour guests, and assist the needy.”

This moment wasn’t just the beginning of revelation — it was the beginning of Islam’s story.

The First Believer

Khadijah (RA) holds the honour of being the first person to accept Islam. She believed in the message from the very beginning and stood by the Prophet ﷺ through trials and tribulations. Her unwavering support is a reminder of the power of faith, trust, and companionship.

A Message for All of Humanity

The Quran continued to be revealed over the span of 23 years — addressing real situations, offering guidance, and transforming society. Today, the Quran is memorised by millions and remains unchanged, preserved in its original form.

It continues to be our manual for life — guiding us in belief, character, justice, and mercy.
